the original of this print Sandy used Acrylic paints on
canvas. This image was used by the United States
Department of Agriculture, Office of Civil Rights, as
the cover to their 'American Indians and Alaska Natives
- A Guide to USDA Programs'. This image depicts
the majestic Bald Eagle flying before the Lakota (Sioux)
symbol of the sun. This represents hope and belief
that our future is a clean slate, and we should count
our blessings each day. |

Historically, it is known that the Sioux tribes met
together in what was known as seven council's campfires.
From the seven councils the dialects of the Lakota,
Nakota, and Dakota emerged. The off shoots of the
dialects are the various tribes Oglala, Standing Rock,
Rosebud, etc.
The
council fires were symbolic of warmth and friendship as
these large tribes would meet together. Many old
friends and family members would be reunited at this
gathering. The moons signify not only the passing
of days but also the passing of generations |
